Audio text — Sofya Ivanovna — Софья Ивановна

  • Given name — Sofya (Софья)

  • Patronymic — Ivanovna (Ивановна) — the daughter of Ivan (Иван)

  • Family name — Karamazova (Карамазова) after the marriage.

We don't know her maiden name. I believe Dostoevsky did this deliberately - to show that she was an orphan and poor. The old woman, General Vorokhov's widow who took her in to raise her, likely didn't give her her surname. Besides, she was married off at 16.

She was Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov's second wife, mother of two children - Ivan and Alexei (there is a 4-year age difference between them).

It is reported that she died after eight years of marriage.

The fact that she and Adelaide, the first wife, shared the same social circle was most likely not coincidental, meant to show the similarity of their fates after becoming involved with Karamazov.
