Which translation to read

Honestly, I don't know which translation is the best. I will be reading this version — Oxford World’s Classics. The translation by Nicolas Pasternak Slater.

One of the fun activities of this club is comparing translations with each other, as well as with the original. I have the original, I have read it many times. But I will be reading in English with you for the first time.

From my experience reading War and Peace in English, the Footnotes and Tangents community has shown that there is no perfect translation, but that makes it all the more interesting. We will compare and see what the translators have added or taken away from the original.

Why read С&P:

  1. Psychological Depth: Dostoevsky delves deep into the human psyche, exploring complex characters and their motivations. Reading C&P offers a profound look at the intricacies of human nature.

  2. Moral Questions: The novel poses thought-provoking ethical dilemmas that challenge readers to think about justice, guilt, and redemption. It’s a great way to engage in deep, philosophical discussions.

  3. Vivid Setting: The atmospheric depiction of 19th-century St. Petersburg brings the city to life, immersing you in its streets, sounds, and social dynamics. It’s like taking a historical tour through literature.

  4. Literary Influence: Understanding C&P provides insight into its significant influence on modern literature and culture. You’ll see echoes of Dostoevsky’s themes and characters in many contemporary works.

  5. Engaging Plot: The novel’s narrative keeps you on the edge of your seat with its suspenseful and gripping storyline. It’s a page-turner that balances intellectual depth with compelling drama.
